Gait Lab

*** Currently Only Available in our Joliet Office ***

At Advanced Foot and Ankle Centers of Illinois, we pride ourselves on providing the latest technology to diagnose and treat our patients. Our newest addition to our technology arsenal is our gait analysis lab.

The analysis of a patient’s gait includes analysis of the weight distribution on both feet, the symmetry of the patient’s legs, as well as the patient’s gait cycle.

Components of Gait Analysis

Gait analysis is broken down into two types: static analysis and dynamic analysis. There are some similarities and differences between the two types.

Static Analysis

  • Analyzes the ground pressure of the foot while in a standing position
  • Can be performed with shoes on to test the shoe itself or the orthotic within the shoe
  • Can be performed without shoes on to test the true ground pressure from the bare foot
  • Patients stand on the gait mat and are instructed to breathe normally and refrain from speaking during analysis

Dynamic Analysis

  • Analyzes the ground pressure of the foot while walking or running
  • Can be performed with shoes on to test the shoe itself or the orthotic within the shoe
  • Can be performed without shoes on to test the true ground pressure from the bare foot
  • Patients walk or run, either on the gait mat or treadmill, at a natural and comfortable speed
  • Treadmill is typically used when a greater number of steps are needed for analysis

Using the data gathered during the gait analysis, your podiatrist can determine which treatment options would work best for you. One common treatment option is custom orthotics. Orthotics can help adjust and correct a patient’s weight distribution on their feet, resulting in pain relief in the ankles, knees, hips, and spine.

If you’ve been experiencing any pain while standing, walking, or running, be sure to schedule an appointment at our Joliet office. Our gait analysis lab will help you get back on your feet and enjoying the activities you love!
