Why Our Vionic Sandals Will Give Your Feet an Endlessly Comfortable Summer
Warming temperatures means upcoming freedom for many feet!
Some people just can’t take long periods of time in closed shoes and stuffy boots. They want to feel the sun and wind on their toes. It just doesn’t quite feel like summer otherwise.
If you are a sandal aficionado, we do not want to get in the way of your joy. We wouldn’t be doing our jobs as podiatrists, however, if we didn’t provide some advice about this more minimalist form of footwear.
Sandals, just like shoes and boots, come in many different forms and styles—and not all of them are best for your feet. It can be argued that proportionately more types of sandals, by their sheer design, can have negative effects on your foot and ankle health.
But not to fear! We are proud to offer Vionic sandals in our Joliet office as a sound choice for comfort through the warmer months. They are designed by podiatrists, and come in a variety of great models and styles for both men and women!
What makes them a great choice, and what should you be looking for in a pair of good summer sandals? Let’s take a look.
First and Foremost, They’re Not Flip-Flops
When we are talking about sandals, we mean sandals. We are not including light, flimsy flip-flops in this category.
Flip-flops have a low price and convenience as factors in their favor, but neither of these do your feet any favors. The cheapness and ease of slipping on comes at the cost of having almost no support for your feet whatsoever.
If you have no structural problems in your feet, wearing flip-flops is close to walking barefoot—and that’s not great news considering our modern society of hard, flat surfaces everywhere.
If you do have some form of structural abnormality or instability in your feet, things can be even worse. The lack of support and stability can make already poorly distributed weight across the feet even more severe, causing more strain and problems in certain areas of the feet and ankles. Walking in flip-flops also often requires shorter steps and a subconscious clenching of the toes to make sure they stay on, also leading to potential problems.
So ditch flip-flops for good. Sandals with firmer straps and foundations are much better for you. But even then, you still want to look for certain things.
Supporting Your Arches
Even if a sandal has the proper gear to stay strapped to your feet, that does not necessarily mean they are offering good enough support.
Firm arch support helps reduce excess strain on the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue along your arch that is often responsible for daily heel pain.
Vionic sandals offer this form of support in many models of sandal that other brands often do not. They even offer more arch support for beach-focused sandals, where soft sand can make the heel sink and cause even more stress along the heel. Wherever you go, you should have firm support throughout the day.
However, there is one thing that is important to note: Not everyone’s arch shape is within a proper range to benefit from a standard pair of arch-supporting sandals (or any standard sandal, either). If that is the case for you, you might need a more customized sandal or orthotics for best results.
Not all Vionic sandal models have straps on the back. Those that don’t have thick and wide straps in the front to help comfortably maintain the foot within without much sliding. We do often recommend back strap support for more stability, however, and we carry many models that have such.
Not just any strap will do, however. The back strap should fit snugly (but not too tightly) against the curve behind your heel to prevent slipping. Slipping not only makes the motion of your foot more unstable within the shoe, but the friction can cause sore spots and blisters as well.
