When it comes to providing relief from foot and ankle pain and healing soft tissue damage, Multiwave Locked System (MLS) laser therapy is among the most reliable advanced treatments we have.

When simpler and more conservative forms of treatment such as rest, ice, and stretching just aren’t providing the results you are looking for (or it’s clear they wouldn’t from the start), MLS laser can become a valid consideration.

How Does MLS Laser Therapy Work?

Treating pain with lasers might sound counterintuitive at first, but these are not the kinds of lasers that burn through materials. They instead cause the body to react in positive ways.

The Multiwave Locked System uses very specific wavelengths of light energy that can pass through the skin and into the site of an injury. This can cause several effects:

  • Damaged cells are stimulated to accelerate their repair processes, or even restart a job they have previously stopped.
  • Blood flow to the area is increased, providing more oxygen and more of the materials cells need to conduct their repairs.
  • As blood flow brings more nutrients in, it also carries more fluid out, reducing swelling.
  • The body’s immune response can be activated, helping to reduce inflammation and infection risk.

In short, these responses help to reduce pain, reduce inflammation, and accelerate healing

What Can MLS Laser Therapy Treat?

MLS laser therapy is especially effective for soft-tissue injuries, including damage to muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It is commonly used for both acute injuries and long-standing, chronic pain.

Conditions we commonly treat include:

Because MLS laser therapy can stimulate stalled cellular repair, it is often effective for chronic pain that has not responded to other treatments.

What is MLS Laser Therapy Like?

MLS laser therapy is performed over a series of sessions, typically scheduled over several weeks. Your treatment plan will depend on the diagnosis and severity of your condition. Each appointment is held at our laser therapy center, Thrive Laser Pain Center, which is just down the hall from our office.

  • Each session lasts approximately 15–20 minutes
  • No special preparation or downtime is required
  • Treatment is painless; some patients notice a gentle warming sensation
  • Many patients feel improvement after the first session, with continued progress as treatments build on one another

You can return to your normal daily activities immediately after each visit.

Our Advanced Laser Technology:

M-7 and M-Hi Systems

To provide the most effective care possible, our offices utilize two different MLS laser systems. Each laser offers unique capabilities, allowing treatment to be customized to your specific diagnosis and recovery goals.

Your doctor will first diagnose your condition, and the laser technician will determine which laser system—or combination—is best suited to your treatment plan.

M-7 MLS Laser System

The M-7 is designed for treating larger areas while still allowing precise targeting when needed.

Key capabilities include:

  • A robotic scanning head that can treat a broad surface area efficiently
  • A handheld applicator for targeting specific pain points or trigger points
  • The ability to treat multiple areas simultaneously

This system is particularly effective for widespread inflammation, larger muscle groups, or conditions requiring consistent coverage over a broader region.

M-Hi MLS Laser System

The M-Hi laser is ideal for high-precision, point-by-point treatments, especially when smaller joints or trigger points are involved.

Key capabilities include:

  • Interchangeable handpieces designed for acupuncture points, trigger points, and small joints
  • A higher peak power of 270 watts, which can shorten treatment time and deliver a stronger therapeutic effect
  • Reduced energy dispersion, as the handpiece remains in direct alignment with the treatment area for more accurate dosing

This laser is often chosen when focused intensity and precision are needed.
