When it comes to providing relief from foot and ankle pain and healing soft tissue damage, Multiwave Locked System (MLS) laser therapy is among the most reliable advanced treatments we have.

When simpler and more conservative forms of treatment such as rest, ice, and stretching just aren’t providing the results you are looking for (or it’s clear they wouldn’t from the start), MLS laser can become a valid consideration.

How Does MLS Laser Therapy Work?

Treating pain with lasers might sound counterintuitive at first, but these are not the kinds of lasers that burn through materials. They instead cause the body to react in positive ways.

The Multiwave Locked System uses very specific wavelengths of light energy that can pass through the skin and into the site of an injury. This can cause several effects:

  • Damaged cells are stimulated to accelerate their repair processes, or even restart a job they have previously stopped.
  • Blood flow to the area is increased, providing more oxygen and more of the materials cells need to conduct their repairs.
  • As blood flow brings more nutrients in, it also carries more fluid out, reducing swelling.
  • The body’s immune response can be activated, helping to reduce inflammation and infection risk.

In short, these responses help to reduce pain, reduce inflammation, and accelerate healing

What Can MLS Laser Therapy Treat?

We have effectively used MLS laser therapy on a variety of foot and ankle conditions. It typically shows best results on soft tissue injuries, including injuries to muscles, ligaments, and tendons. This can make it particularly effective for many sports injuries

Conditions MLS laser has treated include, but aren’t limited to:

Both sources of recent and chronic pain can be addressed via laser therapy, due to the potential of restarting cellular repair. When the damage at the source of chronic pain has recovered, chronic pain will typically improve.

What is MLS Laser Treatment Like?

MLS laser therapy is typically conducted over a number of sessions, spaced out over weeks or months. The ultimate schedule will largely depend on the nature and severity of the condition being treated.

Each session lasts about 15-20 minutes, and no preparation or aftercare is required. You can come in, receive the treatment, and continue on with your day as normal.

Application of the laser is virtually painless. Some patients report feeling a warming sensation in the treated area.

While many patients do report significant improvement after the first session, it may take more for some to begin feeling results. The good news is that the results of each successive session stack, meaning you should feel better and better over the course of treatment.

We take the time to treat every case that comes through our door individually, learning all we can not only about your condition, but how it is affecting your daily life and goals. Only then will we make recommendations for treatment that best suits your needs.

We will always be happy to answer any questions you have about our recommendations or any form of treatment we offer. Schedule an appointment by calling any of our offices below, or by clicking the “Same Day Appointment” button to reach out to us electronically.
