Understand Achilles Heel Pain

Your Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in your body—and it’s one of the strongest. It can withstand over 1,000 pounds of force. However, you can easily overuse your Achilles tendon and injure it. Some of the most common causes for Achilles tendon injury and pain include:

  • Running.
  • Climbing stairs or inclines.
  • Standing up too quickly.
  • Wearing high heels.
  • Increasing your physical activity levels too quickly.

If you perform the same repetitive motions over and over again, you can weaken the tendon. With too much overuse or exertion, the tendon starts to ache. The area will likely swell, stiffen, and feel tender. If you hear a popping or creaking noise as you walk or run, you should see a podiatrist immediately.

Rely on a Podiatrist to Treat You

At your appointment, your podiatrist will run a few tests (such as ultrasounds, MRIs, or X-rays) to determine if you do have Achilles tendinitis. Then, he or she will recommend one of the following treatment options:

  • Medication, to relieve the pain while you heal.
  • Orthotic devices, to relieve strain on your tendon and cushion it while you walk.
  • Exercise, to strengthen and stretch the tendon so you heal more quickly.
  • Extracorporeal shockwave therapy

If these treatment options don’t relieve your pain and symptoms, you may require surgery. Your podiatrist can tell you more.
